Soil-Amendments

soil amendments such as Leca balls have a porous structure that permits improved root and shoot growth so that your plants become healthier. Leca Balls protect against root rot and pest attacks in plants. Garden Genie’s Leca balls are just right for mulching, regulating soil temperature, and preventing weed growth. The 8-16mm pebble size range of Garden Genie Leca balls, ultimately facilitates dripper systems staying unblocked. These support robust oxygenation.

Key Components of Potting Soil

  1. Peat Moss: Retains moisture and nutrients but can make the mix acidic. It’s lightweight and provides good structure.
  2. Coconut Coir: An alternative to peat, coir is sustainable and offers similar moisture-retaining properties while being more neutral in pH.
  3. Perlite: A volcanic glass that improves drainage and aeration. It’s lightweight and prevents compaction.
  4. Vermiculite: A mineral that retains moisture and nutrients while enhancing aeration. It’s often used in seed-starting mixes.
  5. Compost: Adds nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Well-rotted compost is ideal for enriching the mix.
  6. Bark: Used in mixes for orchids and certain other plants, providing excellent drainage and aeration.

Types of Potting Soil

  1. Seed-Starting Mix: A fine-textured, sterile mix that encourages germination. It’s usually lightweight and drains well.
  2. All-Purpose Potting Mix: Suitable for a wide variety of plants, providing a balanced blend of moisture retention and drainage.
  3. Specialty Mixes: These are tailored for specific plant types, like orchid mixes (bark-based) or cactus mixes (sandier and more drained).

Tips for Using Potting Soil

  • Sterilization: If you’re reusing potting soil, consider sterilizing it to eliminate pests and diseases. You can do this by baking it in the oven at a low temperature.
  • Amendments: You can customize your potting mix by adding amendments like worm castings for nutrients or sand for increased drainage.
  • Moisture Management: Water your plants based on their needs. Some plants prefer drier conditions, while others need consistently moist soil.

Potting and Repotting Tips

  • Choose the Right Pot: Ensure pots have drainage holes. Choose a size that allows for growth without being too large, which can lead to overwatering.
  • Loosen Roots: When repotting, gently loosen any compacted roots to encourage new growth.
  • Fill Appropriately: Leave space at the top of the pot for watering; this helps prevent overflow.

Common Issues

  • Overwatering: Can lead to root rot. Ensure your potting mix drains well and adjust watering practices accordingly.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: If leaves are yellowing, consider fertilizing, as potting mixes can lose nutrients over time.
