Natural Winter Decor Using Dried Flowers and Greens
Winter is upon us once again and you may be thinking about sprucing up your home for the colder months. Well, we have got some ideas for you that are super simple and budget-friendly. You’ll be able to bring the outdoors in without spending a fortune.
We have been experimenting with different ways to use dried flowers and greens for winter décor. Not only do they look beautiful but they last for months without watering. You can find lots of materials just by taking a walk outside after the ground freezes. Here are different projects you can try yourself.
Wreath on the Door
One of the easiest is making a wreath for your front door. All you need is a wire wreath frame which you can find cheap in craft stores. Then gather fallen branches, pinecones, berries – anything you find that gives your wreath personality. Start weaving and twisting the materials into the wreath frame. Make sure to overlap pieces so it stays full and lush looking. Add a bow on top for the last touch. Now your door has a warm welcome all season long.
Centerpiece for the Table
Another great way to spruce up your dining room is with a centerpiece for the table. Get a low bowl or vase that will fit nicely in the middle. Fill it with an arrangement of your favorites from outside- curly willow branches, seed pods, dried grass. They are also available at many florists in Hialeah Florida during this time. Add some cinnamon sticks or orange slices for a scent. Some pinecones tucked in will add interest and texture. You’ve instantly brought the coziness of winter right to your table without any watering needed.
Garland Around the Mantle
Next, try garland along the mantle above your fireplace. Cut twine or jute rope into a length that will wrap around the entire mantel space with some extra. Starting on one end, tightly wrap the rope and begin weaving in your dried goods – eucalyptus, rose hips, cinnamon leaves, Indian cucumber – whatever you’ve gathered. Secure it with hot glue every few inches so it stays put. Once the garland is full, trim off any excess twine. Now every time you make a fire, you’ll be reminded of winter walking outside.
Photo Hangings on the Wall
You can get more creative with wreath making, too. Try twisting together bits of bark, pinecones, and seed pods into ring shapes, then securing them to a burlap or lace backing using hot glue. Hang these on your walls for easy, natural artwork. You may find you have the start of a collection! I’ve made several sizes and shapes and hung them in a variety of groups in my entryway. Photos are welcome to be added too if you’d like to personalize them further.
Centerpiece for Small Spaces
If your table space is small, a simple centerpiece can be made to fit. Stack some coffee filter paper in a thin glass vase or cylinder, then gently tuck in curly willow branches, cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices, or whatever strikes your fancy. The white of the coffee filters lets the true colors of the florals shine through. Now you do not need to buy any flower arrangement in Hialeah when you can make one!
Garland up the Staircase
Got a staircase that needs sprucing up for winter? Make a skinny garland to drape on the banister using thin jute string, raffia, or baker’s twine. Tie on small pinecones, rose hips, seed pods, and fragrant eucalyptus leaves to softly cascade down the steps. Hot glue them on securely as you work your way down. When complete, take a step back and admire the welcoming winter feel your stairs now have. Guests will be won over as they climb up.
Sachets for Drawers and Closets
Gather your favorite dried flowers, herbs, or spices and place them in small muslin or silk bags to tuck among your stored clothes or in drawers around your home. Rosemary, lavender, bay leaves, chamomile, and citrus peels all make delicious smelling sachets and last for ages. Not only do they keep spiders and moths away, but they also leave your linens and closets feeling fresh and cozy during the cold winter months.
Before the ground fully freezes, be sure to take some walks outside to gather your materials. However, if you’d like a head start or don’t have time to gather everything yourself, you’re in luck!
