Debunk Body Image Idols, Harness the Power of Body Positivity
Outside the realm of memes, social media is a hub for celebrities, idols, and influencers. Those possessing a smartphone can never escape the labyrinth of being ‘inspired’ by what they consume online.
As we scroll through countless Instagram posts and reels, we can’t help but admire and envy the lives and bodies of others. The desire to look like them has become all too common, highlighting that body positivity still hasn’t reached its audience when it’s most needed.
The emphasis on good camera angles, quality, and Photoshop has made the public accept a certain ‘standard’ of beauty. This manufactured ideal has distorted our perceptions, making it harder to embrace the natural diversity of real bodies.
As we enter a new era of body positivity, it is time to burst the bubble of unrealistic beauty standards first. And this blog will teach you exactly how:
Your Idol Doesn’t Care — But Your Body Does!
Who we see on our phones cannot really see us unless we post.
Most of our body image issues occurred when our favorite celebrity flaunted their ant waists and chiseled jawlines on their pages. Their perfect life made us wonder why we don’t have everything in control. How is it that they have a routine, a beautiful face, a good body, and so many admirers?
We see them doing their thing, posting and influencing, but what we fail to understand is the work that goes behind each of their posts and updates, which includes a strict workout regimen, diet, sponsored outfits, stylists, touch-ups (yes, we are talking about Photoshop!), and a highly social media team.
We see them not as content creators but as dictators when it does not take a genius to fathom that no common person is able to afford such a lifestyle. In fact, it is a ‘sacrifice’ as much as it is a ‘luxury.’
Maintaining an image for the people who don’t even know you is an immensely foolish thing to do. A healthy body is a blessing that we often overlook. Even if you don’t have curves, it shouldn’t matter as long as you’re feeling yourself, are healthy, and living your life as you please.
The Power of Body Positivity
Body positivity is a rewarding journey, but it takes time to truly take root. Whether you have a crooked tooth, a double chin, or skin that’s fair like vanilla or rich like caramelized macchiato, your unique appearance holds its own captivating charm.
But could you truly appreciate this beauty if you weren’t at peace with how nature crafted you?
The freckles on your face might be the very feature your classmate with clear skin envies—wishing they had those little ‘stars’ scattered across their face. Meanwhile, you might be standing there, wishing you had their clear complexion.
In this tug-of-war for beauty, self-love, and self-acceptance are the only pillars you need to build a better ‘present’ for yourself. We often desire the qualities others possess while overlooking the unique aspects that make us beautiful. Only by embracing these differences can we cultivate a deep sense of self-love and confidence.
Body positivity is not just about appearance; it’s about fostering a mindset that values your worth beyond physical attributes. It’s about recognizing that your body is worthy of love and respect in all its unique features and forms.
This journey isn’t always easy, but with time, self-compassion, and the courage to challenge conventional beauty standards, you can find peace and joy in the skin you’re in.
This concept is articulated beautifully in the recently published journal Expressions of Meby Toni Y. Rudisill. This book strongly focuses on the profound role of self-acceptance in countering body image issues. According to Rudisill, her journal holds the key to a balanced approach to one’s mental, physical, and emotional health.
